The Envision conference brought attention to a new cohort of social justice Evangelicals with a broadening agenda of both personal and societal issues in need of transformation. Reuters and the Washington Post both picked up the story describing the changing landscape of Faith and Politics and interviewing some of the compelling new voices in Christian social action. In particular– our new intern Matt Dunbar! A warm welcome to him as he begins his work in the movement!

Together with a company of friends, they will engage our creative imaginations, asking a profound question for our time. “What if Jesus ran for President? Where would he spend his time stumping? Whose needs would Jesus care for most? What might Jesus say about Iraq? Iran? The economy? etc.”

Please join us for this special gathering to cap off an amazing year of NY Faith & Justice!

Envision 08!

At the Envision 08 gathering of evangelicals talking about the politics of Jesus, we’ve been having groundbreaking conversations with many of the luminaries of contemporary evangelicalism. Yesterday, Lisa Sharon Harper described a radical vision of Shalom. Shalom, she proclaimed, can be a pervasive wholeness and love in all relationships– brother and sister, husband and wife, neighbors, even fellow commuters, and yes also our politicians. In the panel discussion that followed Bart Campolo opened up this vision to being shaped by real relationships with the poor, facing the true and ongoing challenges of working with people facing grave challenges.

Participants were confronted with the difficulty of matching direct service, loving others one-by-one with speaking in the halls of power and working to affect change that could make life different for millions. There’s incredible chemistry in the theology as deeply entrenched urban ministers, like Shane Claiborne and Bart Campolo, encouter scholars like Miroslav Volf and Randy Balmer and discuss with activists like Andrea Smith, and Lisa Harper among many other all-stars in the faith.

Check out a video of coming together Sunday afternoon and

discover the perspectives of other participants including the beatitude society, faith and theology, and Jeremy del Rio.
