In particular– our new intern Matt Dunbar! A warm welcome to him as he begins his work in the movement!

Young Evangelicals Aim to Broaden Agenda
By Deborah Jian Lee | Reuters | Sunday, June 22, 2008; 9:58 AM

PRINCETON, New Jersey (Reuters) – Matt Dunbar is not your typical evangelical Christian.

With his tousled hair, sideburns and a scruffy “soul patch” beard, the 26-year-old New Yorker belongs to a growing minority of young evangelicals who want to broaden their political agenda beyond the traditional opposition to abortion and gay marriage.

Evangelicals like Dunbar are eager to move on and tackle such hot topics as global warming and social justice. More from Washington Post…

At the Envision 08 gathering of evangelicals talking about the politics of Jesus, we’ve been having groundbreaking conversations with many of the luminaries of contemporary evangelicalism. Yesterday, Lisa Sharon Harper described a radical vision of Shalom. Shalom, she proclaimed, can be a pervasive wholeness and love in all relationships– brother and sister, husband and wife, neighbors, even fellow commuters, and yes also our politicians. In the panel discussion that followed Bart Campolo opened up this vision to being shaped by real relationships with the poor, facing the true and ongoing challenges of working with people facing grave challenges.

Participants were confronted with the difficulty of matching direct service, loving others one-by-one with speaking in the halls of power and working to affect change that could make life different for millions. There’s incredible chemistry in the theology as deeply entrenched urban ministers, like Shane Claiborne and Bart Campolo, encouter scholars like Miroslav Volf and Randy Balmer and discuss with activists like Andrea Smith, and Lisa Harper among many other all-stars in the faith.

Check out a video of coming together Sunday afternoon and

discover the perspectives of other participants including the beatitude society, faith and theology, and Jeremy del Rio.

What would it be like to involve your church in reaching out to kids in the public school system? Could it invigorate your youth ministry? Unveil latent teaching and mentoring skills? Connect you with your community?

We invite you to join us for a co-sponsored event with the 20/20 Vision for Schools and their Adopt-a-School program. There are some 1400 public schools in the city and 7000 Evangelical Churches. Imagine if those churches became active in praying for, encouraging, and mentoring the students, teachers, and staff in those schools.

Is it something you could see your church being blessed by?

Are you ready to meet the students in your neighborhood that could use your help?

Reverend Tony Evans, a national leader in the Adopt-a-School movement, will be leading a gathering for pastors and members of churches throughout the city to discuss the process of connecting with schools to build fruitful, challenging, and transformative partnerships.

Thursday, May 29th

5pm gathering for pastors – RSVP
